4 Signs that show it’s time to replace your doors

Published: 21st July 2020

Despite their importance, doors are often overlooked during home improvement projects, as it can be difficult to know when they need replacing. To help you make the right decision we’ve picked out four signs that show it’s time to upgrade your doors.

#1 - Visible damage

Visible damage is the most obvious sign that your doors need replacing. Whether it’s a dent or crack, damage to your front or rear door is a potential security risk that compromises the safety of your family and possessions.

Although doors are designed to last for decades (if they’re properly maintained), over time they’re susceptible to environmental factors such as torrential rain and damp conditions, resulting in rot, mould and decay. In extreme cases, when this moisture is combined with sunlight it can lead to a misshapen door.

At Lockwood Windows security is our top priority. That’s why we ensure our composite doors feature:

  • A 48mm thick solid timber core.
  • Astral S anti-pick lock system.
  • A secure Kommerling outer frame reinforced with galvanised steel for additional security.

#2 - Difficult to open

If your door is difficult to open, has limited range of movement or makes a horrible squeaking noise, it’s time for a new door. Doors that are difficult to open reduce practicality and can be a huge inconvenience.

It’s likely that you’ll first notice a physical change in the effort required to open and close your door, Following this, keep a close eye on the hinges as they may have loosened over time, and pay attention to your door sticking and closing by itself as this can create a health and safety hazard.

#3 - Air & noise is seeping through

Fully functioning doors are great for retaining heat and shutting out noise. However as your door ages, you might start experiencing draughts and sound seeping through. If this occurs, start by taking a closer look at your door as there could be an issue with the frame.

Gaps between your door and its frame are an unfortunate by-product of environmental factors, lack of maintenance and age.

#4 - Aesthetics

Doors create the first impression of your home and are vital for keeping you safe and secure. Even if your door is working as it should, it’s still worth looking out for cracked paintwork and rusty hinges, which can create an unpleasant sight.

Replacing your doors can drastically improve the overall aesthetic of a building, and help you create a friendly and welcoming entryway into your home. Choose from our wide range of foil-laminated colours to design a bespoke finish for your composite or PVCu door.

If you’ve experienced any of the signs listed above, it’s time to look at getting your door replaced. Get in touch with our team to get a free, no obligation consultation or book an appointment at our Huddersfield showroom.
