Energy Ratings

Make Sure Your New Windows are A Rated for Both Energy Efficiency and Security

The new building regulations for energy efficient windows are now in full effect, but did you know that some companies are compromising security to achieve the energy rating standards?

Windows which are installed must be compliant with building regulations in regards to thermal loss, as all homes now need to be as energy efficient as possible - especially considering the harsh winters we have had over the last few years, and the ever increasing cost of energy bills!

To respond to this challenge, the British Fenestration Rating Council (BFRC), in conjunction with the UK glazing industry and European partners, has designed a window rating system which provides simple and accurate information regarding the energy efficiency of a product.

The BFRC provides third party certification for the total thermal performance of windows, which are rated using the familiar A to G scale on the basis of their total energy efficiency, where A-rated is more energy efficient than G-rated. This means that consumers can quickly choose the most suitable window for their needs, and government inspectors and agencies can quickly see if the window meets the legal requirements.

In order to achieve a C-rated window, or above, many companies are choosing to use a basic PVCu system, which achieves the required efficiency rating but is sadly lacking when it comes to security, with only a thermal plastic sleeve for reinforcement, or no reinforcement at all!

For this reason, we advise customers to think carefully before deciding which company to use for new or replacement windows, and would recommend that you ask some key questions before proceeding.

  • 1. Is your supplier part of the BFRC authorised retailer scheme or a member of FENSA? This provides you of assurances of their professionalism and standards.
  • 2. Does the supplier use the A-E energy-efficiency rating? This will help you make a more informed choice as to which windows you choose.
  • 3. Do the frames of your new windows have integral metal reinforcement to maximise security? Window frames without this will not be as secure.
  • 4. Is your supplier listed in the Master Window and Conservatory Installers Association's Top 100 list?

At Lockwood Windows we are not prepared to compromise on security or quality, and have invested heavily to provide the most energy efficient and secure window systems available on the market today.

Kommerling – the Gold Standard Window System

Kommerling – the Gold Standard Window System (http://www.koemmerling.com)

We offer customers the Kommerling 070 and C70 Gold window frame systems, which are highly energy efficient and extruded with a unique lead-free compound, and are reinforced with steel to ensure security.

They are 5 chambered for better thermal performance; have steel reinforced profiles; high security multi-point locking & shoot bolts; internal beading for enhanced security; a wide range of colours - 44 woodgrain and coloured finishes; and they are high impact, colourfast and lead-free PVCu profiles which are better for the environment.

The frame is manufactured on site using the most energy efficient argon filled glass to achieve an 'A' rating.

We want to offer the best products to our customers, and ensure we always meet the highest standards, which is why we have invested in this new Kommerling system. We have installed new tooling and testing equipment, and new computer software, but believe the investment is definitely worth it to be able to offer an 'A' rated product.

In order to maintain our quality and service levels, we are also independently tested and audited every 12 months, which allows us to attach an energy-rating compliance sticker to every trade and domestic window we manufacture and install. We are also proud to say that we are the only manufacturer and installer of dual colours in the Kommerling system in Yorkshire.

Lockwood Windows Receives National Award

The installation of all our windows was completed in a very professional and efficient manner. The workmen who carried out the work were well presented and they all carried out their duties as professionals. Our thanks go out especially to Richard who started and completed the installation. They all tidied up after completing their task each day, which we both appreciated. Again, thanks for a job well done and we will certainly recommend your company to other future prospective clients.
